
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, a tragic incident occurred when a hand grenade, discovered among the belongings of an older family member, detonated, resulting in the death of an Indiana man and injuries to his two teenage children.
The explosion took place on Saturday evening at a residence located in the Lakes of the Four Seasons community in northwestern Indiana, the Associated Press reported.
The 47-year-old man sustained fatal injuries from the blast. His 14-year-old son and 18-year-old daughter were also wounded by shrapnel and were subsequently transported to a hospital for treatment.
Sheriff Oscar Martinez stated that investigators are actively working to determine the cause of the grenade explosion within the home, situated approximately 30 miles (50 kilometers) southeast of Chicago.
At this time, authorities have not released any further details regarding the grenade itself or the reasons behind its presence among the older relative’s belongings.
