Former Republican Rep. Kay Granger of Texas has died at age 83, lawmakers announced Sunday.

Granger served 28 years in Congress and became the first Republican woman to chair the House Appropriations Committee.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and other lawmakers praised her historic career, leadership, and dedication to public service.

Granger, who retired after announcing she would not seek re-election, had been living in assisted care and experiencing health issues before her death, NBC News has reported.

Current and former members of Congress from both parties offered condolences and remembered her as a respected leader and trailblazer.
