A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck near Suez, Egypt, early Monday morning, causing strong shaking near the epicenter and tremors that were felt as far away as Cairo.

The shallow quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, making the shaking more noticeable across the region.

Some residents reported their homes shaking, while several Android users said they received earthquake alerts seconds before the tremor.

Earthquakes of this size are uncommon in Egypt, though the country occasionally feels seismic activity from nearby regions, BNO News has reported.

The event also brought back memories of Egypt’s deadly 1992 earthquake near Cairo, which killed more than 500 people.
