Two firefighting helicopters collided while battling a massive wildfire northwest of Athens, Greece, as crews continued working to contain flames that have destroyed more than 100 homes.

One helicopter crew was rescued safely, while search-and-rescue efforts continued for the second crew after the crash.

The wildfire also forced evacuations in western Attica and on the tourist island of Kefalonia, with firefighters trying to prevent the blaze from reaching populated areas.

Across Europe, record heat and drought have fueled destructive wildfires, although conditions have begun improving in parts of France and Spain, NBC News has reported.

Extreme weather has also caused severe drought across the region, lowering major river levels and disrupting power generation, shipping, and tourism.
