An Indonesian ferry carrying 271 people caught fire Sunday while traveling from Surabaya to Makassar, leaving at least five people dead.

The blaze broke out off the coast of Java, forcing passengers to wear life jackets and some to jump into the sea as flames spread across the vessel.

Rescue teams, tugboats, and nearby ships evacuated 227 passengers and crew members from the burning ferry.

At least 39 people remained missing as of Sunday evening, the AP has reported.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
