Brazil announced it is reducing its diplomatic presence in Argentina after repeated attacks by Argentine President Javier Milei against Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The dispute escalated after Milei called Lula a “thief” and criticized Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

Brazil recalled its ambassador to Argentina in July, and officials said he will not return while Milei continues making hostile remarks toward Lula.

The tensions come as Lula prepares for a reelection campaign and as relations between Brazil, Argentina, and the United States remain strained, the AP has reported.

The diplomatic conflict marks an unusual low point between the two neighboring countries, which have historically maintained close ties.
