A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched three AST SpaceMobile BlueBird satellites from Florida, expanding the company’s direct-to-cell internet constellation in low Earth orbit.

The launch brings the total number of BlueBird satellites in orbit to 13 as AST SpaceMobile prepares to begin beta services later this year.

The new next-generation BlueBird satellites feature larger antennas designed to provide faster internet speeds directly to standard smartphones without modifications.

SpaceX successfully recovered the Falcon 9 booster, marking its 30th launch and landing, while the upper stage deployed the satellites into orbit, Space.com has reported.

AST SpaceMobile says the expanded constellation is a major step toward delivering global space-based cellular broadband coverage.
