A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, shaking parts of Colombia and neighboring Ecuador.

The earthquake was centered near San Jose Del Palmar in the Choco region, about 250 miles west of Bogota, at a depth of roughly 66 miles.

Officials reported injuries and serious damage to buildings in the regional capital, though the full extent of the damage was not immediately known.

The earthquake prompted residents to evacuate homes and buildings as authorities assessed the situation, ABC News has reported.

The quake follows two major earthquakes that struck Venezuela in late June, killing more than 5,000 people and destroying hundreds of buildings.
