Tropical Storm Lala formed Thursday in the Pacific Ocean and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before approaching Hawaii’s Big Island this weekend.

Forecasters warned the storm could bring heavy rain, high winds, dangerous surf and life-threatening flooding and mudslides across Hawaii.

A hurricane warning is in effect for Hawaii County, while a tropical storm watch covers Maui County and several nearby islands.

Rainfall could reach 8 inches to a foot across Maui and the Big Island, with up to 25 inches possible in parts of the Big Island, the AP has reported.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Hernan formed in the Pacific but poses no threat to land, while former Tropical Storm Cristobal weakened into a post-tropical system in the Atlantic.
