Record-breaking flooding has submerged neighborhoods across Indiana after the White River rose above 24.5 feet, more than a foot higher than the previous record set in 1913.

More than 11 inches of rain has fallen east of Indianapolis since Tuesday, prompting Gov. Mike Braun to declare a statewide emergency and activate the Indiana National Guard.

Residents in Anderson were ordered to evacuate as several feet of water covered streets and surrounded homes, destroying properties and displacing families.

First responders have rescued dozens of people across the region, while communities including Yorktown, Franklin County and Cambridge City have reported widespread flooding, CBS News has reported.

The situation could worsen as the White River is expected to remain above its banks through Sunday.
