A woman was arrested Friday in connection with vandalism at the World War II Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Melissa L. Farris faces two felony charges for allegedly damaging federal property and a veterans’ memorial, with each offense carrying penalties of up to 10 years in prison.

The vandalism included filling a memorial fountain with bubbles and spray-painting the message “Clean hands dirty $” in red.

Officials and veterans groups condemned the incident as disrespectful to those who served and died during World War II, the AP has reported.

The arrest comes weeks after a separate, disputed investigation into alleged vandalism at the nearby Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was dropped after officials determined the damage resulted from faulty repairs.
