Jared Kushner met with Hamas leaders in Egypt on Sunday to discuss a U.S.-backed peace plan aimed at ending the conflict and establishing new governance in Gaza.

The talks focused on maintaining the ceasefire, transferring governing authority to a new Palestinian committee, disarming Hamas, facilitating Israeli withdrawals, and deploying an international stabilization force.

The meeting came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the plan and said Israel would not withdraw militarily until Hamas is fully disarmed.

Kushner also met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and is expected to meet Netanyahu in Israel as efforts continue to advance the agreement, CBS News has reported.

Several regional countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Pakistan, criticized Israel’s rejection of the plan and urged the United States and its partners to take steps toward implementing the proposed roadmap.
