Maine Republican gubernatorial nominee Bobby Charles said he plans to ask White House border czar Tom Homan to send ICE agents and U.S. Marshals to polling places before the November midterm elections.

Charles said his goal would be to prevent illegal voting, violence and intimidation, while ensuring that people legally entitled to vote can cast their ballots.

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said federal immigration agents are prohibited by law from being at polling places, while the Maine Democratic Party called Charles’ proposal likely illegal.

The comments come as President Donald Trump and his administration continue to raise concerns about noncitizen voting, despite evidence that such voting is extremely rare, NBC News has reported.

Federal officials have previously said ICE does not plan to deploy agents to polling places, and Charles is scheduled to face Democratic candidate Hannah Pingree in Maine’s November gubernatorial election.
