Nurse N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas has won the Democratic Senate primary runoff in Oklahoma, defeating attorney and minister Jim Priest despite being heavily outspent.

The 31-year-old member of the Chickasaw Nation describes herself as a democratic socialist and supports progressive policies including Medicare for All, universal childcare and paid parental leave.

Thomas also supports abolishing ICE and said she believes the current economic system is failing Americans, while emphasizing healthcare access in rural Oklahoma as a major campaign issue.

She will face Republican Rep. Kevin Hern in November, who is heavily favored in the deeply Republican state that Donald Trump won by 34 points in 2024, NBC News has reported.

Thomas enters the general election with a significant financial disadvantage, having spent about $57,000 during the primary and holding only $456 in her campaign account compared with Hern’s $2.6 million.
