Former Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladić, who was convicted of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, has died at age 84.

He died at a United Nations prison hospital in The Hague while serving a life sentence.

Mladić was convicted in 2017 for his role in the 1992–1995 Bosnian War, including the 1995 Srebrenica massacre in which more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys were killed.

He also commanded forces during the brutal siege of Sarajevo, where thousands of civilians were killed, Al-Jazeera has reported.

Known as the “Butcher of Bosnia,” Mladić remained imprisoned until his death, and a UN tribunal has ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
