A large wildfire near Reno, Nevada, has forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate as firefighters battle strong winds and dry conditions.

The Hawk Fire has burned more than 15,000 acres and prompted evacuation orders for about 23,000 residents, while many others have been warned to prepare to leave.

Firefighters have made progress, with the blaze reported to be about one-quarter contained, but officials remain concerned that strong winds could push the flames toward additional homes.

At least seven people have been injured, although no deaths have been reported, and some residents have been allowed to return home as containment improves, the BBC has reported.

Officials are warning residents to remain alert because changing weather conditions could cause the fire to spread rapidly and threaten more communities around Reno.
