South Korea has sentenced Unification Church leader Hak Ja Han to two years in prison for political funding violations and bribery.

The Seoul Central District Court found that Han was involved in giving 100 million won to a ruling-party lawmaker before the 2022 presidential election.

She was also convicted over luxury gifts, including Chanel bags and a diamond necklace, given to former first lady Kim Keon Hee through an intermediary.

The court said the actions were intended to expand the church’s political influence and gain favorable treatment from the government of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, the DW has reported.

Han denied wrongdoing and blamed a subordinate for the actions, while the Unification Church said it will appeal the verdict.
