Volkswagen has approved plans that could eliminate about 100,000 jobs worldwide by 2030 as part of a major restructuring effort.

The additional 50,000 job cuts will come on top of reductions already agreed to, potentially affecting roughly 15% of Volkswagen’s global workforce.

The company is facing declining sales in China, strong competition from Chinese automakers, high costs and the impact of U.S. tariffs.

Volkswagen also plans to reduce its vehicle lineup and could eventually end production at four German factories in Hanover, Emden, Zwickau and Neckarsulm, The Guardian has reported.

CEO Oliver Blume said the restructuring is intended to make Volkswagen more competitive and financially sustainable as the global auto industry undergoes major changes.
