Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military commander convicted of genocide and other war crimes, was buried in Serbia on Monday with military honors and a large crowd in attendance. 

Mladic died last week while serving a life sentence for his role in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, the siege of Sarajevo and other atrocities during the Bosnian War.

Many Serbs continue to view Mladic as a hero, while victims’ families and international officials have strongly condemned efforts to honor him.

The European Union warned Serbia against glorifying Mladic, saying such actions conflict with European values and could further complicate Serbia’s efforts to join the EU, the AP has reported.

The funeral has renewed tensions over Serbia’s unresolved relationship with its wartime past and highlighted the deep ethnic divisions that remain in the Balkans decades after the Bosnian War.
