Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson resigned after the center-left opposition narrowly won the parliamentary election, taking 176 seats to the governing bloc’s 173.

Former Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Social Democrats, is now expected to negotiate with other parties in her bloc to form a new government.

However, disagreements between potential coalition partners, particularly the Center Party and Left Party, could make forming a government difficult.

Kristersson is expected to remain as caretaker prime minister while negotiations continue, with September 29 the earliest date a new prime minister could be approved, Politico has reported.

The election also saw the Sweden Democrats lose seats and support, while the final result remains subject to formal certification.
