President Donald Trump has announced plans to create an “AI Force” and appoint an artificial intelligence czar as concerns grow over the technology’s potential risks.

Trump said his administration would not hinder the growth of the AI industry and rejected calls to slow development while additional safeguards are established.

He described AI as potentially transformative for the U.S. economy and emphasized the importance of maintaining an advantage over China as the two countries compete in advanced technology.

Trump said his administration would use existing criminal and civil laws against people who misuse AI, while continuing to dismiss broader warnings about the technology’s dangers as a “hoax,” the BBC has reported.

Current and former AI researchers have warned that rapid development could pose serious risks to humanity, including one researcher’s claim that there is more than a 10% chance AI could ultimately cause human extinction.
