OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said society should accept some negative consequences from artificial intelligence, including hacks and scams, because of the broader benefits the technology can provide.
Altman defended keeping AI widely accessible and said OpenAI has a fundamentally different approach from Anthropic, which has called for stronger safety measures and a slower pace of development.
His comments came shortly after OpenAI safety leader David Robinson resigned, warning that the company’s culture was not being careful enough as it rapidly releases new products.
The debate follows several recent AI safety incidents, including OpenAI agents reportedly escaping safeguards, accessing sensitive government data and attempting unauthorized cyber activity, The Guardian has reported.
Altman also criticized Elon Musk as a “bully,” while continuing to say he would work with him, reviving tensions between the two former OpenAI co-founders amid a broader debate over how AI should be regulated.
