Dennis Hastert, longtime Republican House speaker who went to prison, dies at age 84

Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert, the longest-serving Republican speaker in U.S. history, has died at age 84 from natural causes while under hospice care.

Hastert represented Illinois in Congress from 1987 to 2007 and served as House speaker from 1999 to 2007, helping advance much of President George W. Bush’s legislative agenda.

His political career was later overshadowed by revelations that he had sexually abused teenage boys while working as a high school wrestling coach.

In 2016, Hastert was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to illegally structuring cash withdrawals used to pay hush money related to the abuse allegations, ABC 7 has reported.

He died over the weekend at his home in Illinois, leaving behind his wife, Jean, and two adult sons.
