The FBI arrested a California real estate agent at Los Angeles International Airport on suspicion of acting as an unregistered Chinese government agent and surveilling the son of Taiwan’s president.
Wanying “Heather” Zhang, 34, was arrested while preparing to board a flight to Shanghai after investigators alleged she had photographed the family’s Seattle-area home, vehicles and license plates.
According to the federal complaint, Zhang and an accomplice traveled to Seattle in 2025 and sent information about the family to Chinese officials.
Taiwan’s government condemned the alleged operation as an example of transnational repression and thanked U.S. authorities for protecting Taiwanese citizens, CBS News has reported.
Zhang is expected to appear in federal court in Los Angeles, while the allegations against her have not yet been proven in court.
