California couple accused of killing son-in-law in public park charged with murder

A California couple, both 77, have been charged with murder after authorities say they shot their 40-year-old son-in-law, Jonathan McKinsey, in a Dublin sports complex parking lot.

Police detained Shili Chen and Shouyong Zhang near the scene, recovered firearms and said surveillance footage showed both suspects shooting McKinsey; prosecutors also said Zhang admitted to the shooting.

The killing occurred days before McKinsey and the couple’s daughter, Candice Jang, were scheduled for a hearing in their contentious divorce and custody dispute involving their three children.

Court records detail competing allegations of years of physical and emotional abuse, including McKinsey’s claims that he faced anti-LGBTQ slurs and violence related to his gender transition, while Jang accused him of abusing her and their children, the AP has reported.

McKinsey, a transgender man who worked as an engineering director for The New York Times Games, was also facing child-abuse and child-endangerment charges when he was killed and was seeking greater visitation with his children.
