Bill Gates warns cyberattacks most imminent AI threat

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates warned Sunday that unregulated artificial intelligence could increase cybersecurity threats, predicting a rise in AI-powered cyberattacks over the next year.

In an interview with ABC News, Gates said the immediate danger comes less from AI becoming uncontrollable and more from malicious individuals using advanced systems without adequate safeguards.

He warned that removing safety restrictions from powerful AI models could enable criminals and other bad actors to carry out cyberattacks and potentially assist in developing biological threats.

Gates, who previously warned that AI could cause major disruptions to employment and society, said stronger protections are needed to address the technology’s growing risks, the AFP has reported.

He also rejected the idea that AI companies should rely solely on voluntary self-regulation, arguing that society needs stronger safeguards to ensure the most dangerous technologies are used responsibly.
