NASA’s hunting for a secret underground cave on the moon

NASA has selected a new research project to investigate whether a large underground cavern or ancient lava tube extends beneath a pit on the Moon’s surface.

The project, called GIMLI, short for Geophysical Instruments for Marius Lunar Pit Investigation, aims to help scientists better understand the Moon’s hidden geological features.

Scientists believe ancient volcanic activity may have created underground passages that could provide valuable information about the Moon’s history and structure.

GIMLI is one of three newly selected NASA investigations designed to expand lunar knowledge and help prepare for future human exploration and a planned Moon base near the lunar south pole, Space.com has reported.

NASA officials say gathering information about the Moon’s environment, available resources and potential hazards will be essential to helping astronauts safely live and work on its surface.
