Panama declared a state of emergency after two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 6.6 in magnitude struck the country, causing widespread damage but no reported deaths.
Officials reported 27 injuries and more than 100 aftershocks, while buildings, homes, schools, hospitals, roads, hotels, churches, and bridges sustained damage.
The hardest-hit areas included the central provinces of Veraguas, Herrera, Coclé, and Los Santos, where approximately 420 homes and 420 public schools were damaged.
Landslides and damaged roads left some communities cut off, while residents whose homes were destroyed or damaged waited for government assistance, The Guardian has reported.
The United States pledged $5 million in humanitarian aid and deployed a disaster response team, while military helicopters delivered about 2,000 pounds of food to affected residents.
