A federal jury consisting of five men and seven women has been selected and sworn in for the bribery and corruption trial of former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and executives from the city’s recycling contractor.
Federal prosecutors allege that Thao shared confidential information with the Duong family, accepted political benefits and participated in an illegal pay-to-play scheme involving California Waste Solutions.
The trial also involves recycling executives David and Andy Duong and could last at least six weeks, with prosecutors potentially calling as many as 68 witnesses.
Court filings describe allegations involving secret recordings, payments intended to influence local politics and efforts to conceal damaging information, KTVU 2 has reported.
The case has drawn public attention, including from a former judge who helped lead Thao’s recall campaign and said she hopes the trial will ensure accountability.
