Kyiv preparing for total electricity blackout, possible evacuation

Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine, is preparing for a total electricity blackout as the Russian military continues to strike the country’s infrastructure in an attempt to leave Ukrainians without power as winter nears.

  • BBC – Kyiv residents should be prepared to leave the city if there is a total loss of power, mayor Vitaliy Klitschko has said.
  • THE HILL – “A few days ago, journalists asked me: does the capital have a blackout plan?” Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, said in a Telegram post Sunday. “I will answer again. In the war situation in which we live, it is necessary to have plans in case of various scenarios of development of events and emergency situations. And be ready to act.”
  • DW – “But we want to be open. Our enemies are doing all they can to leave this city without heating, without electricity and without water supply — in short so that we all die,” the Kyiv mayor said.
  • USA TODAY – Power outages caused by Russia’s drone and missile attacks have affected 16 provinces and forced Kyiv officials to contemplate conducting mass evacuations.
