Starting from April 2023, Discover will be the pioneer among credit card issuers in monitoring firearm transactions carried out by their cardholders.

Breitbart News reported on September 11, 2022 that Visa yielded to demands from gun control organizations and New York Democrats and will now classify firearm and ammunition transactions through a new sales categorization.

The Associated Press noted that Mastercard and other leading credit card companies also agreed to label gun purchases.

The Independent Journal Review (IJR) reported on March 2, 2023 that Discover will be the first credit card company to monitor firearm transactions by initiating the process in April.

With over 55 million Discover cards currently in use, a significant amount of data regarding gun transactions can be collected through the company.

The news organization Reuters noted that Discover Financial Services was ahead of Visa and Mastercard in February 2023. Reuters also highlighted that Discover would “allow its network to track purchases at gun retailers come April, making it the first among its peers to publicly give a date for moving ahead with the initiative, which is aimed at helping authorities probe gun-related crimes.”
