On Thursday, Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, was taken into custody at his residence in North Dighton, Massachusetts, following his alleged involvement in leaking multiple sensitive US intelligence documents.
This leak is being considered the most significant national security breach in the past decade, the New York Post reported.
The New York Times had reported that investigators were seeking to speak with Teixeira, who was believed to be stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.
Following the report, law enforcement officers surrounded his home, and the FBI arrested him.
News helicopter footage showed Teixeira surrendering to FBI agents who were dressed in camouflage. In a statement, the FBI confirmed that Teixeira’s arrest is an example of their continuous effort to identify and hold accountable those who put national security at risk.
Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed in a brief statement that Teixeira was apprehended without incident, and he is being charged with allegedly unauthorized removal, retention, and transmission of classified national defense information.
