According to Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD), there is a possibility that Special Counsel Jack Smith is actively contemplating the pursuit of seditious conspiracy charges against former President Donald Trump.

During an interview on MSNBC’s “Inside with Jen Psaki,” Raskin expressed his belief that Smith should explore the option of charging Trump with seditious conspiracy, which involves conspiring to overthrow the government, the Washington Examiner reported.

Raskin highlighted recent trials and convictions of members of the Proud Boys under this charge as a precedent that supports such action, suggesting that Trump may have been involved in the alleged conspiracy.

Raskin stated, “There is a strong possibility that Trump was affiliated with either the Proud Boys or the Oathkeepers conspiracy, or potentially involved in a larger overlapping concentric ring conspiracy that encompasses these groups. It is crucial that our justice system ensures fairness, so that those who actively participated in the assault on democratic institutions are held accountable, regardless of their position within the hierarchy.”

The Democratic representative from Maryland further commended the efforts of the Department of Justice, citing the numerous arrests and convictions as evidence of an insurrection having occurred.

Additionally, Raskin cited the failed second impeachment of the president as further evidence supporting the notion that Trump had been involved in an insurrectionary act.
