Several top House Democrats call on Biden to step aside during leadership call

Several House Democratic ranking members expressed to Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries their belief, during a recent call, that President Joe Biden should withdraw from the 2024 campaign, citing concerns about the potential impact on the Democratic Party’s chances of regaining the House majority.

The call, convened by Jeffries to gauge opinions before lawmakers return to Washington, revealed a division among members, with more voices opposing Biden’s candidacy than supporting it.

Jeffries did not disclose his own stance on the matter, CNN has reported.

The discussion highlighted worries that continuing with Biden could jeopardize electoral success, prompting some to suggest Vice President Kamala Harris as a preferred nominee.

The issue is expected to be pivotal during the upcoming Democratic caucus meeting.
