The White House sharply criticized Sen. Chuck Schumer after he told Punchbowl News that the ongoing government shutdown was making things “better” for Democrats.

Officials called his remarks “disgusting and revealing,” accusing Schumer and his party of celebrating Americans’ suffering during the standoff.

Schumer’s team responded that his comments were taken out of context, arguing he meant Democrats’ case to protect health care and end the shutdown was growing stronger as its impacts became clearer.

President Trump and other Republicans blamed Schumer for the shutdown, claiming he is catering to progressives amid speculation about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez possibly challenging him in 2026, Fox News has reported.

The White House also warned it may not guarantee backpay for furloughed federal workers, raising pressure on Congress to reach a deal.
