Hurricane Melissa to bring catastrophic impacts to the western Caribbean

Hurricane Melissa has turned deadly in the Caribbean, claiming at least four lives in Haiti and the Dominican Republic as it intensifies over the warm waters of the Western Atlantic.

Forecasters warn the storm will strengthen further, potentially reaching Category 5 status before making landfall on Jamaica’s southern coast near Kingston on Tuesday, Oct. 28.

Experts predict storm surges of up to 15 feet, threatening critical infrastructure such as airports, ports, power plants, and water systems located in low-lying coastal areas, Accu Weather has reported.

AccuWeather meteorologists caution that rapid intensification and severe flooding could create a catastrophic situation across Jamaica and the northern Caribbean.
