An 18-year-old Swiss national has died from injuries suffered in a deadly bar fire in the Swiss Alps, raising the death toll to 41 a month after the incident.
The fire broke out shortly after midnight on Jan. 1 at the packed Le Constellation bar in the ski resort of Crans-Montana.
Investigators believe sparkling candles placed on Champagne bottles ignited the blaze when they came too close to the ceiling.
Authorities are examining whether ceiling soundproofing met safety regulations and whether the candles were permitted, noting that fire safety inspections had not been conducted since 2019, NPR has reported.
Swiss prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into the bar’s owners on suspicion of negligence related to the fire.
