Democrat flips reliably red Texas district in victory that stuns Republican party

Democrat Taylor Rehmet won a special election for a Texas state senate seat Saturday, flipping a district that Donald Trump carried by 17 points in 2024.

Rehmet, a labor union leader and Air Force veteran, defeated Republican Leigh Wambsganss by more than 14 points in the Fort Worth-area district.

The victory adds to Democrats’ strong performance in special elections this cycle and is seen as a warning to Republicans, according to DNC chair Ken Martin.

The seat was previously held by Republican Kelly Hancock, who resigned after four terms, and Rehmet now serves until January, needing to win the November general election for a full term, The Guardian has reported.

Despite the flip, the Texas legislature remains GOP-controlled, and the district’s broader county remains slightly Republican-leaning.
