A man identified as Shamar Elkins killed eight children and wounded two women in a domestic violence shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, before being killed by police after a car chase.

Authorities said most of the victims were his own children, and many were likely shot while asleep inside a home.

The suspect also carjacked a vehicle while fleeing and was later fatally shot by officers in a neighboring parish.

Officials described the scene as “extensive” and said investigators are still trying to determine the motive behind the attack, NBC News has reported.

Community and political leaders called the incident a devastating tragedy, with victims aged between 3 and 11.
