Sen. Thom Tillis said he may oppose confirming acting Attorney General Todd Blanche if he is nominated, citing concerns over the Justice Department’s handling of Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot cases.
He criticized a recent DOJ move to vacate seditious conspiracy convictions of Oath Keepers and Proud Boys members involved in the attack.
Tillis said his stance against leniency for those who committed violence on Jan. 6 is firm and not conditional.
He added that he previously opposed other nominees he viewed as too soft on the riot, The Hill has reported.
While acknowledging positive interactions with Blanche, Tillis said anyone who condones violence against police will not get his support.
