Vancouver approves 6-month delivery robot pilot program

Vancouver councillors have approved a six-month pilot program allowing food delivery robots to operate on sidewalks in downtown and Kitsilano starting this fall.

The program, run by U.S.-based Serve Robotics, aims to test “last-mile” delivery using small electric robots already used in cities like Los Angeles.

Supporters say the technology could reduce emissions, improve efficiency, and complement existing delivery services.

Critics, including some officials and experts, warn that the robots need careful oversight due to potential impacts on pedestrians, workers, and accessibility for people with disabilities, CBC News has reported.

City staff will work with the province to monitor the pilot and use the results to guide future regulations.
