Chilean police have captured former military officer Nelson Haase, who was convicted of kidnapping and murdering singer-songwriter Victor Jara during the country’s 1973 military dictatorship.

Jara, a leading figure in Chile’s New Song movement, was tortured and killed days after Augusto Pinochet’s coup.

Haase fled after receiving a 25-year prison sentence in 2023 but was recently found in southern Chile.

Seven former military officers were convicted in connection with Jara’s murder, with most now imprisoned, CBS News has reported.

Jara’s killing remains one of the most notorious crimes committed during Chile’s dictatorship, which left thousands dead or missing.
