More than 320,000 people have been evacuated across France and Spain as massive wildfires continue to spread through southern Europe.

In France’s Gironde region, a fire has burned about 42,000 hectares, forcing 220,000 evacuations while thousands shelter in temporary facilities.

Firefighters have slowed the fire’s spread, but officials warn conditions remain dangerous, with nearly 2,750 firefighters and military support battling the blaze.

In Spain, some elderly residents evacuated from the Madrid area are being allowed to return home as crews work to stabilize the fires, Euro News has reported.

French officials say wildfires have burned roughly 116,000 hectares nationwide this year, with 88 firefighters injured during the response.
