Bodies retrieved from Indonesian volcano after eruption kills 3 hikers

Rescuers on Indonesia’s Halmahera island recovered the bodies of two Singaporean hikers who were trapped after Mount Dukono erupted on Friday.

The men, aged 30 and 27, were found near the body of an Indonesian female hiker close to the volcano’s crater.

Rescue efforts were slowed by thick volcanic debris, dangerous terrain, and ongoing eruptions that continued to release ash and hot material.

The three victims were part of a group of 20 hikers who ignored safety restrictions while climbing the active volcano, though 17 others were safely evacuated, the AP has reported.

Authorities have since ended the rescue mission and warned the public to stay outside the 4-kilometer danger zone around Mount Dukono.
