‘Timmy,’ humpback whale released in spectacular rescue effort, is found dead off Denmark

A humpback whale found dead near Denmark’s Anholt island was confirmed to be the same whale rescued and released earlier this month after repeated strandings along Germany’s Baltic coast.

Nicknamed “Timmy” and “Hope,” the whale had drawn widespread attention and debate over whether rescue efforts would help or harm the exhausted animal.

After becoming stranded multiple times, the whale was transported by barge and released into waters leading toward the North Sea on May 2.

Officials confirmed its identity through a tracking device still attached to its back, though the cause of death remains unknown, NBC News has reported.

Authorities have not decided whether to remove or examine the whale but urged the public to keep away for safety reasons.
