Democratic congressman Ro Khanna offered a qualified defense of Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, acknowledging his “misogynistic” past behavior while saying it was not surprising to many people in Maine.
Platner, a former Marine and oyster farmer running against Republican Senator Susan Collins, has faced allegations including inappropriate messages and accusations of abusive behavior.
Khanna said he continues to support Platner because he has taken responsibility for his actions and is campaigning on progressive policies such as healthcare reform and taxing the wealthy.
He also said he believes claims from Platner’s former girlfriend and urged the campaign not to attack her, The Guardian has reported.
Khanna added that while voters may be willing to forgive Platner’s past, any proven domestic violence or assault would be disqualifying.
