Former Fox News host Steve Hilton has advanced to California’s gubernatorial general election and will face former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.
Both candidates emerged from a crowded “top-two” primary system in which the leading vote-getters advance regardless of party.
Becerra led the field with about 28% of the vote, while Hilton followed closely with roughly 25% as ballots continued to be counted.
The race highlights California’s Democratic dominance, with Republicans heavily outnumbered statewide and no GOP governor elected in two decades, NBC News has reported.
The general election is expected to be competitive in messaging but heavily favors Democrats based on historical voting patterns.
