California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency for Los Angeles as firefighters continue battling a massive warehouse fire in Boyle Heights that has burned for days.
The blaze began in a large cold storage facility and has proven difficult to control due to lingering heat, hazardous materials, and poor visibility inside the building.
Smoke and chemical odors, including from a ruptured ammonia line, have spread across parts of the city, prompting health concerns and earlier shelter-in-place warnings.
Residents near the site have reported disruptions and some evacuations, while officials have opened relief centers and distributed masks and supplies, The Guardian has reported.
Fire crews are still working to contain the fire and address major biohazard risks from millions of pounds of spoiled food inside the facility.
