American boy, 12, attacked by shark in Bahamas while swimming

A 12-year-old American boy is in stable condition after being bitten by a shark while swimming near Staniel Cay in the Bahamas during a family tour of the Exuma Cays.

The attack occurred Tuesday afternoon while he was in the water with his brother, and he was later transported to New Providence for medical treatment.

Authorities have not disclosed the extent of his injuries or the species of shark involved.

The Bahamas is known for its marine tourism and has one of the world’s highest rates of unprovoked shark attacks, though such incidents remain rare, CBS News has reported.

The attack follows several other shark-related injuries involving American tourists in the Bahamas in recent years.
