Mike Burgess said Australian intelligence agencies have linked two antisemitic attacks to individuals with strong Australian ties who were allegedly acting on behalf of Iran’s security apparatus.
An Australian citizen working as a senior intelligence officer in Iran is accused of orchestrating a 2024 firebombing in Sydney’s Bondi area, while a former Australian resident in Iraq allegedly directed an attack on a Melbourne synagogue.
Burgess warned that antisemitism remains a common theme across many violent extremist groups and highlighted growing threats from terrorism, espionage, and foreign interference.
He also said foreign governments are targeting Australians through intimidation campaigns and efforts to obtain sensitive information, including details related to the AUKUS pact, The Guardian has reported.
Burgess urged Australians to promote tolerance and mutual respect, arguing that reducing social division is essential to improving national security.
